Extra-mural studies (EMS)

Here at Rutland and Kings Veterinary Centre we place huge importance on Extra Mural placements and warmly welcome students in our small animal teams.

Through our comprehensive EMS programme, we offer a supportive and highly professional environment, in which students are able to develop their clinical skills and professional competence and ultimately, our hope is that we can support students in becoming the best practitioners that they can possibly be.

Students gain hands-on, ‘real life’ experience with a range of species, bringing their studies to life and offering them a unique opportunity, far beyond the parameters of the curriculum.

We are committed to making EMS a really meaningful experience for students and it is important to us that they leave having gained a beneficial, realistic insight into the world of veterinary medicine. If students fully immerse themselves in the opportunity, they will find their time with us enormously rewarding and have great fun along the way (the cake is great, too!)

Our first class EMS programme is a commitment to not only the future of current students
but also to that of generations of vets to come

What might a placement involve?

Students can expect to be heavily involved in assisting the veterinary surgeons in all areas of veterinary medicine; we take a very hands on approach. Students are also encouraged to partake in clinical discussions and to share their opinions and clinical judgement.

Areas of special interest are considered on application and we endeavour to accommodate students where we feel it would be most beneficial for them.
